I volunteer with RSVP Tulsa (Retired Senior Volunteer Program), and they have a group of computer classes that collectively are called PowerUp! – I teach some of those classes. The participants are retirees, and the experience level runs the gamut from zero computer experience to lots of experience. There are several of us who head up classes on various things, and as the program has grown we have expanded our offerings.
We now have a basic beginner’s class, a class on Word, Excel, mp3 players and downloading music, digital photo management using Picasa, online shopping and computer maintenance/cleanup. We have additional offerings that we are currently working on getting scheduled and as requests come up we try to see if we can get them going.
These classes occur at various times throughout the year. If you’re in Tulsa and want to take one or more of the classes, you’ll need to call the RSVP office to sign up (the spots are limited, and fill up fast but if a class is full you can be put on the waiting list in case someone who signed up isn’t able to take the class at that particular time). The phone number is 280-8656.
The classes I teach are the computer maintenance/cleanup and general questions that anyone has. I had started sending out e-mails to the class members after our classes with a recap of what we’d talked about, and links to sites we’d discussed.
At the last session I decided to change from sending e-mails to posting on this blog – my thinking was that it would be easier for people to return to the blog to see what we’d discussed rather than needing to sift through their e-mail messages. Also, the e-mails only went to the people in each class and I get questions periodically from people that have attended my prior classes, and friends so I thought they might appreciate this method of communication too.
Now what I’m doing is, during class times I’ll continue with discussing what went on in each day’s session, but between classes I’ll post things here as they come up. That way people can check in as they wish, and the information will be here.
I get questions on various things fairly regularly, and since I read lots of computer newsletters and message boards, as I come upon something that I think might be interesting I’ll post it here.
I’m open to suggestions – I won’t necessarily post something every day, but as things come up, I’ll put them here for you to see. I hope you enjoy the blog.
